BYD's Largest Self-operated Ro-ro Ship "BYD SHEN ZHEN" Maiden Call at Xiamen Port

Time: 2025-11-27 Hits: 0

Xiamen, China – In a significant boost to China's new energy vehicle (NEV) export capacity, BYD's largest self-operated roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ship, the "BYD SHEN ZHEN," made its maiden voyage from Xiamen Port, carrying 1,768 BYD new energy vehicles bound for Mexico.

Vessel Specifications and Innovation

The "BYD SHEN ZHEN," with a capacity of 9,200 standard parking spaces, is the largest vessel in BYD's owned fleet and ranks as the world's second-largest car carrier.

Equipped with an LNG (liquefied natural gas)/fuel oil dual-fuel propulsion system, the ship also features BYD's self-developed box-type battery pack and shaft generator technology for the first time. This innovation, combined with a high-voltage shore power system, enables zero carbon emissions during port stays and the entire loading and unloading process.

Strategic Importance and Operational Efficiency

Unlike common container ships, a ro-ro vessel functions like a massive mobile parking lot. Vehicles can drive directly into the ship's cabin, eliminating the need for container loading and unloading and significantly improving transport efficiency.

"Having a self-operated fleet not only effectively controls shipping costs, a key factor affecting the final price, but also enhances Chinese automakers' power of discourse and autonomy in international trade," stated Zhang Weihua, Assistant General Manager of Xiamen Modern Terminal.

The development of BYD's self-operated fleet is a crucial step in implementing the national strategy of "domestically built ships for domestically made cars," helping to break the long-standing transportation bottleneck of "hard-to-find ships" for auto ro-ro exports.

Seamless Logistics and Customs Support

To ensure the success of this maiden call, Dongdu Customs tailored a supervision plan in advance. They provided round-the-clock appointment inspection services and implemented facilitation measures such as "advanced declaration and direct loading upon arrival," ensuring seamless handling of all export process links for the NEVs.

The loading operation was highly efficient. Xiamen Modern Terminal simultaneously activated six loading lines, completing the entire process of loading all 1,768 vehicles in just 12 hours.

The vehicles transported on this voyage originated from BYD's Zhengzhou production base. They were transported by rail to Xiamen, achieving a remarkably swift collection time of just four days to gather all 1,768 vehicles at the port.

Strong Export Growth

According to Xiamen Customs statistics, from January to October this year:

  • Xiamen City exported automobiles worth 136.5 billion yuan, a surge of 65.1% year-on-year.

  • This included 6.1 billion yuan in new energy vehicle exports, marking a robust 74.1% growth.
